Retold by The Legendary Connection

TLC#00089

In a sunny meadow, there lived a clever little Crow. She was flying around, enjoying the bright blue sky, when suddenly she felt very, very thirsty. "Oh no!" she thought, "I need to find some water to drink!"

The little Crow flapped her wings and looked all around. She flew over the trees and over the fields, searching for something to quench her thirst. Finally, she spotted a Pitcher sitting under a tree. "Ah! That looks like it has water in it," she said happily.

The Crow flew down to the Pitcher and peeked inside. There was indeed some water at the bottom, but there was a problem—it was only a little bit of water. The Pitcher was deep, and no matter how hard the Crow tried, her beak couldn’t reach the water.

"Oh no!" she said again. "What can I do? I’m so thirsty, but the water is too far down."

The little Crow sat and thought. She knew she needed water, but just flying away wouldn't help her. "There must be a way!" she thought to herself. The Crow was a very wise bird and didn't give up easily.

Suddenly, an idea came to her. She noticed that there were lots of little pebbles scattered around the ground. "Hmm," she said, "what if I drop these pebbles into the Pitcher? Maybe the water will rise higher and I can reach it."

So, the clever little Crow began picking up the pebbles, one by one, and dropping them into the Pitcher. At first, nothing seemed to happen, but she didn’t stop. She kept dropping pebble after pebble, patiently watching what would happen.

With each pebble, the water in the Pitcher began to rise, just a little bit at a time. The Crow’s heart started to feel hopeful. "It’s working!" she crowed. "The water is getting closer and closer to the top!"

Finally, after dropping enough pebbles, the water had risen to the brim of the Pitcher. The clever little Crow could now drink the water easily! She dipped her beak in and drank until she wasn’t thirsty anymore.

"Ahh," she sighed happily. "I did it! I used my clever thinking to solve the problem."

As she flew away, feeling proud of herself, the little Crow realized something important: When you face a challenge, you can find a way to solve it if you think carefully and don't give up.
